About ComItEs

In each consular district where there are more than 3000 registered Italian electors, a Committee of Italians Abroad (ComItEs) is elected. This Committee represents Italians abroad in their relations with diplomatic and consular representatives. ComItEs identifies the social and cultural needs of the community it represents; it can conduct surveys and research and make proposals on behalf of the Italian community to consular and local government officials.

ComItEs members serve a term of five years and each ComItEs is made up of 12 or 18 members, depending on the number of Italian citizens residing in the consular region. In the spirit of fair representation, up to one quarter of the ComItEs is composed of co-opted Italians who are not eligible for direct election to the Committee.

To this end, each ComItEs, in conjunction with the consular authorities, the regions, local authorities and clubs and associations organises initiatives to improve the social and cultural life of the local Italian community.

ComItEs Melbourne is particularly interested in fostering the participation of young people, in promoting equal opportunities, in advancing social and educational programs, promoting vocational training, recreation, sport and leisure activities for the Italian community living in the consular district of Victoria and Tasmania.
